Yoga Clothes for Comfort, Functionality - and Fun!

Yoga clothes should be comfortable and functional. They should allow you to move freely and not distract you from your practice. They should feel good against your skin, so they don't cause any irritation.

Ideally, the clothing should be absorbent so that it wicks sweat away from your body. There are few things that feel as uncomfortable as a sticky, clammy body that is moist from perspiration.

I also think they should be attractive and fun to wear. When I do yoga alone in my home, I am willing to wear an old tee shirt and sweats or baggy shorts. When I practice in a class, I am more discriminating in what I choose to wear.

I admit it. I work very hard to keep my body in shape, and when I am with others, I want to show off the efforts of my hard work. I usually choose form fitting pants and a fitted tee shirt. This allows me to see the outline of my body in the mirror so I can maintain good form, and it lets me move without having to fuss with my clothes. They are also flattering to my body, so when I wear them I feel good.

Here are some of the things that you should look for in yoga clothing so that they work well for you and make you feel good about yourself and your practice.

Yoga Pants
There are many types of yoga pants. Some are long and go down to your ankles; others stop just below your knees. Often they are relatively form fitting. These types of pants have the benefit of allowing your instructor to see your alignment so she can make any necessary adjustments to your form.

If you aren't comfortable in pants that are so revealing, you might enjoy wearing loose, cotton trousers. They offer freedom of movement without being too tight.

Whatever pants you choose, make sure that you can bend and move freely in them. Also be sure that there are no bulky ties at the waist that might be uncomfortable when you are lying in a prone position.

Yoga Shorts
Yoga shorts are a very good choice if you practice Bikram or hot yoga, because the room is heated to such a high temperature. They are a good bet in the warm summer months when long pants might be too warm. They also help you more easily check the proper alignment of your lower body because you can see your knees and ankles.

The yoga shorts should be long enough to cover your derriere and they should not ride up. Form fitting shorts usually don't move too much, so they may be just right for you.

Yoga Tops
Yoga tops should allow you to move freely without having them fall in your face. Tee shirts should be short enough so that your lower body is not hidden, so you can more easily check your alignment. Some women like to wear sports bras (especially those who practice Bikram yoga). If you choose to wear one, make sure that it holds you securely and that nothing falls out when you are bending or stretching. You don't want to wear something that is going to cause you to worry about what you might be showing to the rest of the class.

Yoga tops come in many bright and attractive colors. You might also have fun wearing shirts with characters such as Yoga girl on them.

Yoga Shoes
Most people do not wear shoes during their practice. However, they might be useful if you practice outside in a park, on a beach, or some place where you would not want to take off your shoes and socks. Yoga shoes look very similar to other athletic footwear, except that the soles allow for considerable flexibility in your foot and the tops of the shoes are very lightweight. Some popular brands include Puma yoga shoes and Adidas shoes for yoga.

Jacket
Many people might not think that a jacket is an important part of yoga clothing, but I beg to disagree. I think it is absolutely critical to take a jacket with you to your yoga class. I have been in many classes where the temperature has been quite cool (some are downright freezing). While the temperature often doesn't matter too much while I am moving during the poses, it becomes quite a different story when the time comes to meditate.

I don't know about you, but I find it difficult if not impossible, to relax when I am cold. Bringing a jacket with you gives you an option of covering up during the relaxation period if you are feeling chilly. Feeling warm and comfortable allows you the pleasure of letting your body relax fully.

So yoga clothes should be functional, comfortable, and give you the freedom to totally enjoy your practice. Have fun with them and enjoy wearing the ones that make you feel good!

Questions Beginners Often Ask Before They Learn Yoga

What benefits can I get from doing yoga?
Yoga offers you rejuvenation and improved health, more energy and joy in life. Greater flexibility, sound sleep, improved digestion, peace of mind, clearer concentration, better balance and more smiles.

These are just a few of the gifts that await you. A regular practice of Yoga will influence all aspects of your being; it is far more than physical fitness. It is a profoundly integrated experience of health and renewal.Feel your body heat up;  muscles starting to release their grip on your bones. Shoulders and neck begin to relax, you become one with the rhythm of your breath and the day melts away.

Can I do Yoga if I am not flexible? Yoga is not intended to be a practice to get you ready for a Cirque Du Soleil try-out.  Yoga is about accepting your limits and respecting the boundaries of your own body  Since we all have different body types and some people have been doing yoga for decades it can take a long time to do the full- expression of the pose.  Yoga is ultimately about awareness of our selves and restraint.  We can honor the limits of our bodies when we do not push ourselves past our edge.  When we reach our physical or mental limit, can can simply be aware of that.  Yoga is about open-ness and feeling connected on a deeper level to our own bodies, whether that is touching our toes or never touching our toes. 

Ultimately, Yoga is about acceptance and detachment to results.  The poses will not be accessible to all body types due to fitness level, bone structure, past injuries, height, age and weight.  Being aware and present in our bodies is the ultimate gift we can give our bodies.

Is Yoga just an exercise practice?  Yoga is a set of mental and physical practices that lead to self-realization.  In the West, Yoga has been associated mostly with physical postures that can lead to a more supple and toned body as well as stretches that are relaxing.  Yoga includes follow many mental and physical restraints such as non-greed, non-stealing, and detachment to material possessions, status and results. 

It does require a high level of discipline, commitment, awareness and self-restraint in order to be in compliance with the many limbs of Yogic Philosophy.  Meditation was one of the the original practices that helped to cleanse the mind of ego-based wants such as these in order to gain self-mastery and awareness.  Poses were later added in order to help with the breath work so that one could sit more comfortably for a long time in the meditative poses.  Yoga encourages leading a clean lifestyle with an emphasis on eating foods that are clean, nourishing and leave us feeling full of vitality.  Evolution and enlightenment is a possible result of a life of contemplation, compassion, awareness and purity.

Is yoga a type of religion? Yoga is not a form of religion. Yoga is a more internal path and it is not necessary to do certain lifestyle practices in a group or even at certain times of year in a ritualized fashion. One is frequently encouraged to question and to do a deep process of self-inquiry.  Yoga also holds that our consciousness is closely related to our subconscious in such a way that by exerting superior control on the conscious states, we can control our subconscious one in which are contained deeply ingrained values, beliefs and behaviors that may not be healthy or positive or beneficial for humanity.  Since we often think and act in ways that we know are not positive or healthy, we often feel powerless to change.  Various yogic practices help to gain the necessary awareness that gives us access to our subconscious.

Is yoga just a set of poses and stretches? Yoga is not just a set of physical poses.  Yoga does not refer just to the poses as is commonly thought in the West.  Yoga is a series of lifestyle practices that include diet, hygiene, yoga philosophy, breath-control techniques, meditation techniques relaxation techniques, awareness techniques, self-mastery techniques and physical poses that lead to self-realization, compassion and evolution.  Yoga philosophy emphasizes non-judgement, acceptance and compassion at its core.

Yoga and Your Health-Seizure Control

Yoga is an ancient practice that has produced amazing results in modern medicine. This practice and philosophy of Yoga is gaining worldwide attention as the focal point in treating seizures. The World Health Organization gives an estimate that about 50 million people in the world have epilepsy, 75 percent with seizure disorders and many of them do not receive any medical treatment.

Ancient Indian writings have described four types of epilepsy and nine other disorders that cause seizures in children. They believed the discipline of Yoga reestablishes the balance that can help prevent or even stop seizures. Epilepsy is a basic term used to describe different illnesses that has one common symptom and that is seizures. Seizures disrupt the normal activity of the central nervous system. Yoga is one of the oldest practices known for its usefulness in balancing the different aspects of your mind and body.

So, what can Yoga do to help prevent or stop seizures? If you practice Yoga, you are keeping the balance between mind and body normal. This imbalance can cause seizures. Therefore, practicing poses, doing breathing exercises and clearing your mind with meditation can go a long way toward preventing seizures. Tension is a well-known trigger for seizures as well and practicing Yoga is a great stress reliever.

Here is something you can do to stop a seizure. If you feel yourself slipping into a seizure, catch a sharp breath, just as if you are frightened and hold it. This will cause a change in your blood pressure, metabolism, and altars the flow of blood and oxygen to your brain. Then go into deep breathing to help restore normal respiration. If this practice can be learned, it may help to control seizures or even stop one before it starts.

The physical practice of Yoga helps restore the metabolic balance of your body. It also increases stamina, improves circulation, concentration and respiration. It also helps calm the central nervous system that will decrease your chances of having a seizure.

Meditation is also an important part of the Yoga practice to help prevent seizures. Stress can be a major trigger to seizures. Meditation can improve blood flow to the brain, slows stress hormones, and helps to increase the serotonin which helps keep the nervous system calm.

Ten years ago, the results of a study was published in The Indian Journal of Medical Research on Yoga practice for seizure control. Researchers in Europe and United States did their own study with astounding results. Those in the study that practiced the style of Sahaja Yoga for six months experience a decrease in their seizure activity by 86 percent.

This is a large enough percentage to warrant using Yoga techniques to help control seizures. It's easy to do, free of medication and can help your body with its overall health. If you are already taking medication for control of seizures, consult with your Doctor. Don't just stop taking your medication without his approval. Why not try it if you suffer from occasional seizures.
