A Personal Kundalini Experience

I wasn't seeking a Kundalini experience, nor trying to make it occur, I wasn't even thinking about it. While I have written on the theoretical aspects of Kundalini energy, how it occurs and can push one toewards spiritual awakening - I never gave a thought to whether or not a Kundalini experience would happen to me.

I'm a very spiritual person and I believe that once you reach a certain level of balance or oneness with the universe, Kundalini can occur to you. Furthermore, it does produce awakening effects and I'll explain what that's like below.

There are those who seek a Kundalini experience and employ techniques in an attempt to initiate it, for example, through tantric exercises or lots of meditation. It may occur early in life, for others later, or for some, not at all.

For those seeking to awaken Kundalini through powerful tantric methods, it must be known that Kundalini energy should be approached with respect and caution because of possible negative effects. I was simply meditating when it occurred however, and for me it did have negative effects.

Kundalini can leave a person with varying effects. Some people experience a week, a month or even a year of happiness, joy, motivation and abundant vital energy. It awakens something in the soul that brings out the absolute best in that person. For others, Kundalini can be a negative experience. The person can be left with all kinds of negative emotions, such as fear, paranoia, anxiety, obsession, anger and more.

I personally believe, through my experience, that Kundalini raises the energies of the individual overall and enhances spiritual awakening, but it also produces heightened awareness of the self by bringing up perhaps one or two major aspects of personality to the surface and leaving them there for you to deal with. For example, if you've been self conscious all your life, even if you're starting to deal or come to terms with it, Kundalini will bring it up, place it in the forefront of your mind and leave you to writhe in it.

It's a way of self cleansing, you have no choice, but to actively confront, work thorough and resolve this aspect of yourself, else you wind up in psychological distress! Often-times Kundalini does just that, it leaves a person stripped bare and out of control. It's possible that many with mental health problems are suffering due to the impact of Kundalini and an inability to resolve it's aftermath.

All for the purpose of learning and discovery of both the self and the world around them, I also firmly believe that a personal Kundalini experience can occur when a person progresses spiritually to a point where they realize they are one with all people, the Earth and the universe. And when they are practicing love and light in everything they do, everyday. Then, Kundalini energy is more likely to occur through meditation alone.

My Kundalini experience is another of those events that reaffirms for me that spirituality is the ultimate truth, just like receiving an unequivocally accurate message through a medium from a loved one who's passed-over, or the time both my friend and I saw a ghost as clear as day. My Kundalini event was so vivid and unmistakable, and the effects so profound, that there will never ever be doubt for me that there's far more to life than what is presented through our five senses.

Here's what happened...

I was meditating in the evening, sitting in the lotus position on the floor, as close as I could get my spine to the ground as possible, as always. My body had been aching, especially my shoulders, so I was visualizing healing energy entering my body. I continuously visualized, as I sometimes do, a stream of gold-white, glistening healing energy streaming down from the cosmos and flowing into the top of my head. It would then spiral down through the chakras and filter into every energy channel and farthest corner of my body.

I had been doing this for about 10 minutes, when I started slipping into a familiar trance. During these trances I see all kinds of visions, meet all sorts of entities and gain a multitude of new notions to mull over in my mind. These trance states usually last about a half hour to an hour, but something different occurred this time. I suddenly snapped out of the trance as I felt what seemed to be hot syrup being poured over the top of my head, creating a tingling, pins and needles sort of sensation.

Of course it was not exactly like that, but with the limitations of the written word, it's the best way I can explain it. This sensation lasted only a few moments, as the heat then traveled inside of my head and the whole process sped up. It can only be described as an unmistakable wave of intense and powerful heat spreading from my head area and traveling quite quickly downward through my body like a wave of fire.

I was frozen and unable to move as it burned its way down through my entire body. At the same time, I became intensely dizzy and my head filled with pins and needles. It was as if my head area had shorted-out. Still unable to move, my head fell backward and the heat filled my legs. After this, a slower, duller, but hotter energy spread upward to the top of my head again. Still motionless, I was stuck in a state of constant hot-flush, burning hot, with a swirling static energy remaining from the waist down, and inside my head. There were no thoughts in my mind, only observations of the foreign sensations going on within my body. I wasn't afraid, but I knew that the experience unfolding was not of my own doing. There was, undoubtedly, higher forces at work, powerful ones.

This state must have lasted about five minutes before I managed to drag myself out of it. I couldn't believe what had occurred and it took a while to realize that it was a Kundalini experience. I felt amazed and privileged. However, the gratefulness was short-lived...

Some people have obvious positive effects from Kundalini. Mine, although ultimately positive, felt very negative in the beginning. As I prepared for bed, I felt terribly ill. Like I'd caught the flu. The next day it was the same thing. None of the family seemed unwell, only me. Then, anxiety started to set in. It came from nowhere, uncontrollable anxiety about absolutely everything. I couldn't understand why I felt this way. I felt anxious about time pressures, events coming up, things I had to do, things to organize, people to see, even leaving the house!

I'd never ever felt like that before. Several days passed while I continued to assume I had caught a virus that was making me feel both physically unwell and bringing my mood down. However, a virus surely couldn't account for a complete personality change? When my partner Paul and I were discussing my personal Kundalini experience and my resulting illness, we came upon the realization that the symptoms began immediately after it. Paul and I recalled, and re-read examples, of similar experiences had by various authors and writers who had also been through a Kundalini awakening.

I investigated the intense heat that I experienced as it was a dominant factor in my Kundalini experience and it turned out to be a classic "tumo" experience, "Tumo" refers to the "psychic heat that is related to Kundalini and is produced by certain meditational practices that do not have any known trigger and occurs regardless of the temperature you are in or the activity of your body," (Hyatt & Black, 1999).

So, why the anxiety? If there's one thing I've struggled with throughout my adult life it's anxiety. It's always been manageable and no one would never know. Most people experience anxiety frequently, and like many people, I had learned to control and even eliminate much of it as I gained in years. However, the 'seek and destroy' element of Kundalini energy had dug out and brought to the surface that very aspect of me, the thing that had been my bugbear for so many years.

Kundalini brought it up and left it on the surface for me to experience and heal all on my own. Upon realizing this, I knew that the Kundalini awakening had happened for a reason. I had reached a certain level of spiritual progress and now it was time to cleanse away the anxiety.

So there it was, on the surface of my personality, right at the forefront of my mind, a truck load of anxiety about lots of silly things! Therefore, with Paul's help, I began to face and deal with every little thing I was anxious about.

I did not cave in or falter, I faced and pushed forward through each aspect of personal anxiety until I had conquered it all. It took about 4 weeks to feel right again, but only because I meditated and faced the emotional release of anxiety head-on. For many people it takes a lot longer, especially if they don't realize what's happening to them or they wind up requiring medical and psychiatric treatment, if the problem cannot be recognized and faced at all.

So you see, there is no 'bad' Kundalini, the intent is only good. If you experience positive effects such as elation, happiness and feeling energetic, then that's great. I really hope I get that next time! But if the effects of Kundalini seem bad, they are only negative on the surface because once you have worked through those effects, you'll find you're cleansed and a more balanced person as a result!

You Can Practice Tantra Yoga or Tantric Sex as an Individual, Solo, or Single Person

Have you heard of Tantra Yoga before or Tantric Sex and you're curious how you can get into that, but you're single? Do you think Tantra is just not for you or do you feel isolated?

Well, I am going to be discussing Tantra Yoga and dispelling or expanding, as we do in Tantra, your awareness You can, indeed, practice Tantra techniques and methods as a single person.

So, I am sure when you Google "Tantra Yoga" or "Tantric Sex" or Tantra and some sort of method, you usually find photos of a man and a woman in some sort of position or you'll see two men and women together or you might see a group of men and women doing something in their midsection and the subject is usually about connection or relationship - enhancing things of that nature.

And I am sure that that can evoke a misconception, a misunderstanding that if you don't have a partner or if your partner is not into spiritual stuff or wouldn't be curious or open enough to try Tantra that this isn't for you. I am here to dispel that idea.

Tantra can be practiced alone. You might think just because some of the techniques are focused more on a relating aspect, like relating yourself to others, or a balance of self versus getting immersed in other people's energies and so on, that you can't do things by yourself. And while there are many techniques and methods used where you need to have another person to practice with, that is not the end-all, be-all with Tantra. There are so many things and so many ways that you can work with Tantra especially the White aspect, by yourself.

There are different colors used to define the different types of Tantra you might be practicing. White Tantra (connecting with the Divine or transcending the physical realm) as well as what is called Pink Tantra (opening and healing the heart chakra) would be a great way of doing exploring Tantric methods as an individual - be it you have multiple partners, but you just identify yourself as your primary partner or if you are completely single, not interested in having a relationship or as I said before, your partner might just be weirded out and not into it.

Another reason that doing Tantra by yourself can be important, is that solitary Tantra can help you be more aware of the subtle changes in your body, you get to master your own breath without having to worry about the breathing patterns or syncing up with another person. And you get to master the different styles of touch, the different ways of sounding and really get that embodied, get the muscle memory in yourself going on and really reach a new level of awareness. And when you do, bringing it to another person, or sharing with another person will be that much easier.

Having practiced by yourself, you are coming with a really sturdy and knowledged background. I also encourage women, especially, to get into Tantra as an individual. That way you can learn your own body and your own rhythms. You can learn what you do want, what you don't want and what feels good and what doesn't feel good. And this gives one, a greater vocabulary.

The more words and images that we have to express ourselves: what's good for our bodies, what's good for our souls, then the better we will be at communicating, expressing and getting what we need in the world because we know what we want.

So, yes, you can do Tantra by yourself and I highly encourage you to have a solo practice.

About Kali

Kali Ma is the first of the 10 mahavidya, or wisdom goddesses in the tantric tradition.

She is portrayed with black skin, 4 arms, wide open glaring eyes, a necklace consisting of severed heads and dances on the graves in the cemetery her tongue lolling wildly out of her big wide open mouth, laughing at the attachments of us mortal humans.

Indeed she is a terrible goddess to behold, especially for those who are not initiated in her ways.

About resonance

One of the most profound teachings of the tantric system is the teaching of resonance. The law of attraction which everyone is speaking about now a days is a subset of the law of resonance.

All matter in the universe is energy which vibrates at different frequencies. Two energies that vibrate with the same frequency will be attracted to one another and start to resonate together, meaning that they will start to exchange information and energy between them.

We are continually moving through different resonance spheres during the day and our moods and physical well being is continually being affected by these spheres. If we are in a place where the resonance is "angry" we will ourselves become angry. If we are in a place where the resonance is hectic and on edge as it is when watching a game of football in a stadium we will also become hectic and edgy. If we are in place where the resonance is serene and peaceful we will also become serene and peaceful.

A resonance can be inherent in a color, in a landscape in a room with certain people etc. Certain landscapes lend to feelings of serenity and peace while other landscapes can make us feel lonely or terrified. Certain colours make us feel certain moods and feelings, and this goes as well for music.

If you meditate upon heavy metal you will enter into states of rage, hatred and destruction. You will enter into a state of resonance with the people who made the music and the state that they were in when they made the music. You will enter into resonance with all the people who listen to that music and who resonate with that state. You will start downloading all their negativity and hatred.

Likewise if you meditate on beautiful music you will resonate with states of beauty and harmony and with all the people that listen to that music.

One of the quickest ways of entering into a state of meditation with a specific aspect is by meditating with music which has the resonance of that aspect, which is why music is so efficient in "jump starting" us to enter the desired mood.

About making music applying the law of resonance

If you want to make music or art with a certain specific mood, you have to immerse yourself in that mood. You have to study it by looking at pictures and listening to music which conveys that mood. You have to act according to the mood as if it were already in you. In this way you will through the process of resonance, start to download the necessary information for the creation of the artwork. Through contemplation of an object you can enter into a state of resonance with that object and you will be able to very precisely convey the mood inherent in the object to anybody else who contemplates your art. The art that has the deepest impact on people is the art which most precisely conveys the resonance the artist immersed himself into while creating the artwork.

Kali and music

Meditation and contemplation on the great Goddess Kali will lead you to contemplate on concepts as life and death, on time, on courage. These are deep powerful states which might be terrifying for those who have not deeply meditated upon these aspects. Kali is dark skinned and terrifying to look at with blood dripping out of her mouth and with the chain of severed heads she wears around her neck.

Music with Kali will then also convey this aspect of terror. This can be done through deep drones and strong percussive rhythms. In this kind of music it also has an effect to use minor tonalities or Arabian/Indian modes with a flat nine to give an aura of mystique.

Ultimately Kali will lead the worshipper to a higher state of being, an opening of the heart when the ephemeral has been surpassed and a deeper understanding of life and death has been attained. This opening of the heart can be given through large strings sections and melodic lines which lead from down and up.

Hans Hvass is a musician, computer scientist and teacher of Tantra and Yoga leading a tantric art and retreat community center in the north of Copenhagen.
