Reiki hand positions (Back)

The therapist will start on one of the shoulders, with their hands on the shoulder muscle and shoulder blade. Many people carry a lot of tension in their shoulders and upper back, which can lead to both back and headaches. This position warms the shoulder muscles allowing the to deeply relax and release tension. The left shoulder is said to carry tension relating to one's past. The right shoulder is said to carry tension relating to one's present. Emotions can be released in this deep state of relaxation, and tears of release may happen.

Next the therapist will move to the middle of the back. This allows energy into the lungs and kidneys, and releases tension held in the back muscles. When muscles are relaxed with Reiki, the bones realign themselves naturally - so this would help with displaced vertebrae.

Moving down to the waist, the therapist puts their hands one in front of the other across the waist. Bad posture is a major cause of tension build up in this area which can affect the lower spine area. This position releases tension in these muscles and thereby relaxes the lower back. The Reiki energy then strengthens the spine allowing the energy to flow but up and down. The digestive processes are also helped in this position.

The lower back is then covered with the therapist placing their hands side by side on the lower back, over the sacrum (base of the spinal cord). The Reiki energy at this point will release tension in this area increasing the flow of energy down the legs. This area relates to issues of support in ones' life. To increase the success of the treatment, the therapist can hold the neck and lower back at the same time.

The therapist then moves to the back of the knees. This position helps feed energy into the sensitive knee tissues. Treating this area will help with varicose veins and generally boost circulation. It also helps draw energy down from the body to be grounded in the feet.

Finally the therapist moves down to the feet. Holding the soles of the recipients' feet with their palms, this can feel extremely comforting. The recipient is now deeply relaxed but will still be consciously aware of their soles of the feet. When people become stressed they tend to feel somewhat ungrounded, this position helps to bring them `home'. This area helps connect us with Mother Earth and our sense of belonging.
